The NGO I’m associated with did this activity a while ago. And I thought I should give it a try.
All I had to do was to put hand hands on paper and draw an outline of both my hands. Then in the left hand’s sketch, I had to write five things I have to let go and in the right hand’s sketch, note down the things I want to hold on to. All the 10 things have to be written in the fingers and thumbs. Then you’ve to assign a colour to those things.
I decided to pick up colour pencils for this and I messed up the right hand. It was supposed to look like rainbow colours throughout the hand. All colours mixing up with each other properly, with one dominant colour in every finger.
So, here are the lists:
5 things to let go:
Anxiety – in dark red
Hesitation – in dark blue
Fear – in dark brown
Overthinking – in dark green
Procrastination – in dark orange
5 things to hold on
Smile and the dimples – in light pink (I know it doesn’t look like pink, but trust me, it is pink)
Blogging and writing – in light red
Pause to breathe – in sky blue
Take one thing at a time – in yellow
The kid in me – in light green (And I messed up the green when I decided to mix more colours to it)
When I showed this to R and said that I will do it again sometime later because the colour pencils didn’t give me many colour choices and also because I messed up the right hand, he told me to do it after a month. It would change the results. Not that I didn’t know this already, but yeah, I’m gonna do it again.
And yeah, I felt happy after filling the colours. Dragging those colour pencils with force was another kind of joy I felt after ages! 😛 😀
If you are thinking of trying it out, feel free to pingback to this post. I’d love to see what you come up with 🙂
This is such a good idea.

It will be posted today. Thanks for the inspiration. In fact the 10 feeling post will be on today too, but a bit late for your time zone. Thanks again.

Ohmygosh! I love this concept, it must feel so good and refreshing at the same time once you write it all out. I’m gonna be trying this out ❤ thanks for sharing!

yes! in fact, more than writing, filling colours in it gave a sense of relief.
Do let me know when you try it! I would love to see what you have in store for us 🙂

First off, you have a very lovely handwriting, Saumya. And secondly, I really enjoyed reading this post. I couldn’t help but smile when I read that you wanted to hold on to the kid inside you. Funnily enough, I said the same thing earlier this morning.
I wish I could be as carefree and optimistic as I once was, long before adulthood came with all its obstacles and pains and drama. The feeling often gets overwhelming, and sometimes kid Obinna is forced to hide in a dark corner inside me. Drawing him out of there isn’t always easy, but I like to comfort myself with the thought that the most rewarding things in life are usually the most difficult to attain.

Hahaha….I just tried to make my words readable..This is the first time I’m being complimented for my handwriting 😛 Thankyou! 🙂
Hi5! I think all of us need to meet that kid once in a while. We have a saying here in India, “Dil to bachcha hai ji”. It means- my heart is a kid.
Adolescence is a difficult time for each one us, with different dramas in every life.
Are you trying to say imply that bringing out the kid Obinna is a difficult task but it’s the most rewarding thing? Ahh yes, it can be difficult but it is definitely a bliss to meet that child that we once were! 🙂

I bet you can tell a lot about someone by what they write. You wanted to let go of things like anxiety and procrastination, but someone else might write “anger,” “rudeness,” and “impulsiveness.” Someone else might write “hiding,” “lying,” and “hypocrisy.”
What a great exercise. I am going to share this with my children and grandchildren. (and do it myself)

Yes, what we write tells a lot about us.
I hope you share the results of everyone on your blog. Would love to see what you have to share 🙂

I did it with my granddaughter today. I tried to give each “let go” a “grab hold” – for example, I want to let go of stress and grab hold of peace. I want to let go of fear and grab hold of faith, let go of anger, grab hold of forgiveness, etc.

Wow! That’s lovely. What did your granddaughter write?

Uh-oh, I forgot. She took them home. I think it was something like “mad” and “patient,” nothing really unusual, but it was sweet. ❤
