Sitting in front of the screen
I strain my eyes
Reading newspapers
In the online archives
Sixty of them
In four days
Mentally exhausted
Emotionally drained
As I finish scanning them
for the words
‘Rape’, ‘sexual assault’ and ‘sexual harassment’
Reflecting that the world is a bad place
I ask my feelings to disappear
Because I am a student of journalism
Reporting about reportage of rape.
PS: I’m short of words to describe how I have been feeling these days.
Read: The rapes on Page 9
Also read: दुष्कर्म. And रेप. The paradoxical language of बलात्कार in a Hindi newspaper

Studying journalism? Or already a journalist?

It’s like healthcare workers – you see so much hurt that you either break, become jaded, or learn to be objective and put your emotions aside. Good luck.
